Ah, the financial year has closed, you’ve reached your business success goals, and it’s time to relax and chill out – said no business owner ever!
While small businesses all over Australia ramp up for the new financial year with new goals, dreams and aspirations, there are two things you must do before anything else.
- Pat yourself on the back!
Celebrate and congratulate yourself on a job well done. It’s been a tough year for many businesses and a lot of people had to change their business to survive – not to mention everything else we had to do because of the pandemic.
So cheers to you – you made it. Maybe you smashed your goals and maybe you didn’t. Every new day is a new opportunity to work on your dream.
- Reflect and plan for business success
And that leads me to business success point number two – as business owners, we must reflect on our performance for the last financial year and start planning for the next one.
Ideally you would have started doing this already – but if you haven’t, no harm done; you can start today!

Small business owners find themselves knee-deep in one (or all) of these common challenges.
- NO LEADS: Not getting enough leads in their business, which means you’re not getting enough sales.
- NO CASH: Limited to no cash flow in your business, which means you can’t pay your bills on time.
- NO TIME: Wearing too many hats and you struggle with time management, which means you’re stressed, overwhelmed and working around the clock for very little in return.
How many of these are you struggling with? One, two, all of them?
Ok, so let’s find a solution to these issues if you’re facing them right now.
When you are planning for more leads, sales, cash, and time, the two documents you need to start with are a business plan and a marketing plan.
I wish I had the magic pills and I could tell you there’s an app for that, or just do this one thing. But I’m sure you know by now that business success takes time, effort, and work.
What is a business plan and why do I need one?
A business plan is a document (at least a one-page overview) that contains your business goals, how you will achieve those goals, and the time-frame in which you want to achieve your goals. It includes information about your target market, KPIs, opportunities, weaknesses, marketing methods and so on.
Why is a business plan important? It’s your business strategy, your plan on what you will achieve and how you will grow your business in the next 12 months. It will help you stay focused in the direction you want to take your business and also give you necessary steps to turn your ideas into reality and success.
What is a marketing plan and why do I need one?
A marketing plan helps you reach the goals set out in your business plan with marketing methods that promote your business, products and services. It helps you stay focused on your target audience and what they need and want from you. The marketing plan and activities help you achieve your business objectives and goals.
You need a business plan and a marketing plan to have the best chance of success this year. The business plan is the strategic foundation and the marketing plan is the strategic direction.
